Outside Awards
Outside awards from all sources must be reported to the office of financial aid. This includes outside scholarships received from:
- High schools
- Local communities
- Scholarship foundations
- Parent’s employer tuition benefits
- Other government, state, city, or private agencies
Notification of Outside Awards
To report outside awards to the office of financial aid please visit ESTHER under the following tabs: Financial Aid/Award Status/Award for Aid Year/Resources & Additional Information. It is important to include the following:
- Name of scholarship
- Amount of scholarship
- State if scholarship is one-time only or renewable
- State how scholarship will be disbursed (if information is available) for example paper check versus electronic transmission
- State frequency of payment (if information is available) for example if entire amount is sent at beginning of the year or sent each semester

Checks should be made payable to Rice University or co-payable to the student and Rice University and mailed to the address above.
Outside Award Policy
Outside awards are considered resources and will reduce the amount of need-based financial aid you are awarded. Reductions in need-based aid will occur in the following order:
- Federal Stafford Loan (Subsidized)
- Federal Perkins Loan
- Federal Work-study
- Rice Tuition Grant
- Other institutional need-based grants/scholarships
