To be eligible, undergraduate and graduate students must be enrolled at least six credit hours and five credit hours, respectively at Rice University as well as meet other program specific requirements. Federal Work Study

Federal Work Study is a part-time employment program for students who have demonstrated financial need according to eligibility criteria set forth by the federal government. Students are limited to earning the dollar amount shown on their award letter.

In order to be considered for a Federal Work Study award, students must complete the FAFSA each year, demonstrate financial need and maintain satisfactory academic progress. Click here for Student Employment FAQs.

Rice Work

Rice Work is an institutional student employment program sponsored by various academic and administrative departments. Rice Work does not require a student to demonstrate financial need or to complete the financial aid process. Click here for Student Employment FAQs.

International or Non-Citizen Students

As an F-1 or J-1 student, you have the opportunity to engage in on-campus work or practical training opportunities off campus. However, you must obtain the appropriate work authorization before starting to work. If you work even one day before or after your authorization, you must leave the U.S. or face deportationFor more information, please see the Office of International Students and Scholars webpage. The Office of Financial Aid does not advise students on this topic. Please contact the OISS at 713-348-6095.

What forms do I need to submit in order to begin employment on campus?

Once you have been offered a job on campus, your employer (department) must submit an Electronic Personnel Action Form (EPAF) through Esther.

All newly hired students paid by Rice University for employment must complete the Eligibility Verification Form (or Form I‐9) with the Payroll Office prior to the start of work or training. (This is a requirement of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and not of Rice University.) Students must present to payroll staff original, unexpired document(s) at this time. Payroll staff will be available during office hours, Monday–Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Direct Deposit Authorization and W-4 form may be completed at the same time with payroll.

America Reads

The America Reads Challenge Program is a federally funded national literacy initiative. The Rice chapter of America Reads is overseen by the Center for Civic Leadership.

Rice students have the opportunity to work with community organizations and schools in Houston by helping children complete their schoolwork, get a jumpstart on curriculum and become engaged with the learning process. Tutors receive training and placements through the Rice Center for Civic Leadership.

Rice students interested in tutoring through America Reads must be eligible for Federal Work Study. For more information or to complete an application, visit the America Reads website.
