Students may be eligible for part time employment at Rice through Federal Work Study or Rice Work. To be eligible, undergraduate and graduate students must be enrolled at least 6 credit hours and 5 credit hours, respectively at Rice University as well as meet other program specific requirements. Federal Work Study is a part-time employment program for students who have demonstrated financial need according to eligibility criteria set forth by the federal government. Students are limited to earning the dollar amount shown on their award letter.

As an F-1 or J-1 student, you have the opportunity to engage in on-campus work or practical training opportunities off-campus. However, you must obtain the appropriate work authorization before starting to work. If you work even one day before or after your authorization, you must leave the U.S. or face deportation. Please see the web pages of the Office of International Students & Scholars for more information. The Office of Financial Aid does not advise students on this topic. Once you have been offered a job on campus, your employer (department) must submit an Electronic Personnel Action Form (EPAF) through Esther.¬†
All newly hired students paid by Rice University for employment must complete the Eligibility Verification Form (or Form I‚Äź9) with the Payroll Office prior to the start of work or training. (This is a requirement of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration
Services (USCIS) and not of Rice University.) ¬†Students must present to Payroll staff original, unexpired document(s) at this time. Payroll staff will be available during office hours, Monday ‚Äď Friday from 9 a.m. ‚Äď 4 p.m.
The¬†Direct Deposit Authorization and W-4 form¬†may be completed at the same time with Payroll.
