Institutional

A completed financial aid application and adherence to our Satisfactory Academic Progress standards are required to receive institutional grant funds. Institutional grant funding is the primary means utilized to meet students’ demonstrated need. Much of this is supported by dedicated fundraising efforts, generous gifts and support of our endowment. Institutional grant award amounts are determined primarily by the information provided on the CSS Profile. As with any other need-based financial aid, eligibility for this funding may fluctuate from year to year based on income, asset and household information.

Federal

Pell Grant

For the 2022–2023 aid year, undergraduate students with a federal Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $6,206 or less may be eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant. The amount of each grant is determined by the student's EFC. These funds are provided by the federal government and are available to you as long as you qualify. In order to continue receiving the funds after your first year, you must complete the FAFSA annually and maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress as determined by Rice University.

State

All Texas resident students must complete a Texas Core Residency Questionnaire and meet Texas residency criteria to be considered for Texas grants.

Due to Texas state funding currently under review by the state legislature, availability for fund allocation is at the discretion of the state. If state funding is unavailable, we will review eligibility for other grants (federal/institutional) as long as all documentation is on file.

Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG)

Students from Texas may qualify for a Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG). These funds are limited and are awarded to degree-seeking undergraduate students with the highest need on a first-come, first-served basis. Graduate students may be eligible and offered TEG if funds are available.

Eligibility is contingent upon completion and submission of the Texas Core Residency Questionnaire to our office via email (fina@rice.edu) or fax (713-348-2139). In the event that the form is not submitted, the student will forfeit the awarded TEG funds. TEG is not an additive award; it is part of the need-based financial aid package.

All eligible students are required to complete the Selective Service Statement. 

Initial undergraduate TEG recipients must complete 24 credit hours and meet Rice’s Satisfactory Academic Progress. Renewal undergraduate TEG recipients will need to complete 24 credit hours, have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA and complete at least 75% of attempted courses.

Initial graduate TEG recipients must complete 18 credit hours and meet Rice’s Satisfactory Academic Progress. Renewal graduate TEG recipients will need to complete 18 credit hours, have at least the minimum 2.67 GPA or that which is required for the degree program enrolled, whichever is higher, be enrolled in 3/4 time, and complete at least 75% of attempted courses.

If you encountered a difficulty that prevented you meeting any or all of the above standards, you can submit a TEG hardship appeal.  

Examples include but are not limited to:

• Severe illness or other debilitating condition that affected your academic performance
• Enrollment under ¾ time in a semester due to circumstances 
• Death of a family member
• Divorce of parents

Other TEG qualifiers, such as state residency, are not subject to appeal.
