Aid Options
Student-athletes have the option to be evaluated for need-based institutional aid and can opt to receive need-based institutional aid in lieu of their athletic scholarship. Need-based aid eligibility is based on various factors such as family income, household size, number in college, asset information and more. Athletic scholarship amounts are determined by the department. We work closely with the Athletics Department to determine these amounts based on each student’s grant-in-aid percentage.
While student-athletes at Rice cannot receive both need-based institutional aid and athletic scholarships, all student-athletes may apply for certain federal student aid such as the Pell Grant or Federal Direct Loans. A valid FAFSA must be on file for any federal student aid consideration.
Disbursements
Student-athletes enrolled in standard semester programs receiving need-based aid or loans will have funds disbursed once per semester, which begins the Wednesday before classes begin. Disbursement will not occur until all financial aid requirements have been completed.
Student-athletes on scholarship and living on campus enrolled in standard semester programs will have funds disbursed once per semester, which begins the Wednesday before classes begin.
Student-athletes awarded off-campus room and board stipends and enrolled in standard semester programs will receive monthly disbursements from these stipends. Student-athletes receiving scholarships or other aid, and enrolled in quadmester programs (ex. MBA@Rice online) will have funds disbursed once per quadmester regardless of housing choice.
